Whatever activities the coop may eventually pursue, may I suggest that it be focused from the start.
I had the unique opportunity of looking into a few of the failing coops. There were very successful at first. But once up there, greed got in and one main reason for their failure stands out: they wanted more and wanted to do big things - so they hopped to what was perceived as 'corporate' activities, wanting to catch some of the 'glamour' of being 'orang korporat' and forgot about the core businesses that got them up there in the first place. Plus, they forgot to take care of their members who had put in all their hard-earned savings to move the coop in the early days. So, after a few stock market failures and not to mention many badly executed JVs here and there, the coops are 'sick', and their initial core businesses which were their money-markers are now no longer so, due to their neglect.
I DON'T know much about running a coop, but looking at those mistakes, I think it's pretty clear what NOT to do. Hope the BoD can focus on a few income generating activities. They need not necessarily be 'glamorous'. Asalkan pulangannya double digit (InsyaAllah), ok la tu!
